In Word a lot of improvements have been made to make it easier to layout objects in your document

 

Firstly when trying to position items such as pictures you will see green guidelines appear so you can easily line up items (as shown below)

 

 

Secondly when positioning items in your document  - you get an icon (as highlighted in red below) appear next to the selected item, which displays a pop-up menu containing various layout options
