Windows 8 has been redesigned so it works just as well on a tablet device as it does on a normal computer with a keyboard and mouse, the table below summarizes some common tasks and shows you the different ways of doing them depending on whether you use a keyboard/mouse or tablet/touch screen gestures

Unlocking the computer

Click anywhere with left mouse button or press spacebar

Swipe upwards

Shutting down the computer

Move mouse to top right or bottom right corner - click Settings and then Power

Swipe in from the right of the screen and tap Settings and then Power

Closing programs / applications

 

(this is for Windows Store Apps not normal Window based applications)

Move mouse to top of screen and mouse pointer will change to a hand, click and hold left mouse button and drag to bottom of the screen

Swipe down from the top of the screen to the bottom

Accessing settings

Move mouse pointer to top right or bottom right corner - click Settings and then Change PC settings

Swipe in from the right of the screen and then tap Settings and then Change PC settings

Charms Menu

Move mouse pointer to top right or bottom right corner

Swipe in from the right of the screen

Show running programs

Mouse mouse to top left corner and then move down

Swipe in from the left of the screen and then back out again

 

N.B. Only works if more than one Windows Store Apps are open

Switch to another running application

Move mouse to top left corner

Swipe in from the left of the screen
