Security has been improved in Office 2010 - a new feature called protected mode protects you when opening documents from an unknown source or downloaded off the internet etc

 

When you open a document you will see a banner across the top of the screen in place of the ribbon (as shown) where you have to click Enable Editing before you can change the document
