To open a document click the File menu to open the Backstage View and click Open...

Shows a list of your personal folders and drives |

Lists contents of currently selected folder - highlighted documents will be previewed in the right hand pane |

Allows you to filter view to show only certain file types |
|
Once you have highlighted a document click Open |
